Research Pop-Up: College Decision-Making for Academically Advanced High School Students: Considerations, Information Gathering, and Lessons Learned
Ten academically advanced high school seniors participated in interviews about the college search and choice process. Thematic analysis identified college choice considerations, identity exploration experiences (Luyckx et al., 2006), the role of social comparisons (Dai & Rinn, 2008), and information gathering practices in this sample of gifted students. This study highlighted the importance of early school-based opportunities for interest and career-related exploration. These seniors noted the need for support in finding and evaluating information about institutional culture, and shared lessons they learned throughout the college decision-making process, including recommendations for parents and school support personnel. Research Pop-Up: Unlocking Gifted Adolescent Motivation: Keys to Increased Student Engagement & Achievement
Through Gagne's DMGT and expectancy-value-theory, this qualitative cross-case study explores gifted adolescent perspectives on motivation and fills a gap in a highly quantitative field. The unrestricted insights of gifted adolescents through the triangulation of multiple data collection methods led to new insights on how to maximize student engagement and achievement. Findings from this study broaden the scope and offer new insights on how to better meet the academic and motivational needs of gifted adolescents through the formatting of lesson development, specific teacher-student interactions, and an awareness of how to increase students' valuation of assignments to increase sustained effort.
